Recent Reads – Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Genre: Contemporary Fiction

Publisher: HarperCollins

Published: 2017

I loved this book. When I originally bought Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine I didn’t read the blurb, nor did I go by any recommendation, I simply saw it was a new release and decided to go for it. The title of the book meant I was not prepared for the rollercoaster of emotions that I was about to go on. The main character, Eleanor Oliphant, tested my abilities for empathy at the beginning before completely falling for the character and balling with tears towards the end. Gail Honeyman touches on mental health issues, a subject that is thankfully but slowly being talked about more often, in an honest and brutal way.

Eleanor Oliphant begins the novel as an abrupt, abrasive, awkward woman who doesn’t quite know how to fit into life and into society. Her inner thoughts and outward comments are both shocking and hilarious. However, part way through the novel there is a turn of events that is deeply moving and emotional, where you find yourself empathising with and rooting for Eleanor. I was not prepared for the twist towards the end which both answered so many questions while creating more. There is no villainous character, no angel character, just human beings and real life issues. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Gail Honeyman had ended the novel in such a way that left the story still alive even as the words stopped on the page.

Eleanor Oliphant

Although not a necessarily happy story, there are happy moments and hopeful moments and even the heart-breaking moments that would make me read this book again.

The cover of the hardback: Stark white with matches shaped into the outline of a house surrounding the title. Although this gives nothing away to the story beforehand, it is perfectly metaphorical to several aspects within the story.

Would I Recommend? 100%. However, be prepared. It is shocking, powerful, funny and heart-breaking all at the same time.

Eleanor.

*Also, it is supposed to be turned into a motion picture which should tell you how great this is.*
